Maglite Tactical Shotgun Butt Stock Shell Holder (Butt Cuff V3) Review: Solid Old-School Option

I was recently browsing the Maglite website (the same company famous for those massive D-cell flashlights) and spotted something unexpected in their Maglite Tactical division: the Shotgun Butt Stock Shell Holder, aka the Butt Cuff V3. This was truly the only gun accessory the company offers and as a shotgun enthusiast, I thought, why not? At $69.99, it seemed worth a shot.

This cuff holds 7+1 rounds: seven shells in a nylon pocket and one secured underneath. It’s made from thick, durable nylon with tight elastic webbing. It attaches via Velcro around the stock, includes a near-universal cutout for sling loops, and stays put thanks to two nylon straps that wrap behind the recoil pad.

I installed mine on a Benelli M4 with a Mesa Tactical Urbino stock. I had to remove the cheek riser first (which wasn’t an issue since I don’t run an optic anyway). Fitment was surprisingly excellent for a universal nylon product with no excessive overhang, no slipping or sliding against the stock.

The shell holders grip rounds securely, and the pocket flap design ensures they’re always oriented brass-down without any risk of dropping out. I was pleasantly surprised at how little it affected shouldering and manipulation. My cheek weld and presentation stayed consistent. The only noticeable contact was my wrist brushing the “+1” round underneath, a constant reminder it was there.

This is definitely an old-school design in a world of Aridus QDCs, Vang Comp shot cards, and Chisel stocks. It’s not built for speed or modularity, as reloading is considerably slower than modern alternatives, but it excels at retention at a reasonable price. Shells stay put reliably, no fumbling or lost ammo.

It’s not a “go-fast” piece of kit, and faster options exist. That said, it’s a seems like a good addition to a hunting shotgun or light-duty setup where you want varied loads (slugs, buck, birdshot) on board and secure without worrying about them falling out. Perfect for a classic 30-year-old design like the Benelli M4 or an old police trade-in pump.

If you’re after reliable, no-nonsense shell storage that prioritizes security over reload speed, this Maglite cuff might be the next nylon product for you.
